The NC500

Scotland’s answer to America’s Route 66, the North Coast 500 has been named among the top six road coastal road trips in the world.  Apparently set up by Prince Charles (bless) for those roadie enthusiasts wanting to take in some of the most scenic parts of the country.

It truely is a stunning route, running 500 miles from Inverness, to the Kyle of Lochalsh on the West Coast, via the rugged north coast to John O’Groats, before heading down the east coast, completing the loop in Inverness.  It’s slow going, much of it on narrow and winding single track, gear grinding roads; it can take 4 hours to cover 100kms in places.  But worth it.  The scenery is magnificent; from highland vistas to incredible coastal views.

If you like a good road trip, put this one on your list.  It’s a must do.  A great way to spend our last week before heading south, homeward bound!
